Wikoshke Washte

Wikoshke Washte

18x24inch Acrylic on Canvas March 2020

“Wikoshke Washte”roughly translates into “pretty girl”. Dakota language is descriptive so there isn’t true terms for ugly or pretty it’s more describing how good the girl is.

This piece is meant to show the beauty in Dakota Culture and fashion. The quilled earrings, the use of dentillium, all of it together is very beautiful and luxurious. Although I feel unless you’ve worked with those materials you can’t truly appreciate the work and craft woven into such garments. I used my sister as a model for this work, she’s always been my muse, for a majority of my art.
